Large Animal Services

Large Animal Services in Los Lunas, NM

Our doctors and staff at Los Lunas Animal Clinic have over four decades of large animal experience involved in nearly every aspect of veterinary medicine.

The clinic’s main large animal focus is equine medicine and surgery. We are one of the very few places in the southwest where nearly any equine surgery can be performed.

We also do ranch work on cattle which includes pregnancy checking, bull fertility, and miscellaneous care. All of our cattle work is done at your place since we are not equipped with a cattle chute at the clinic.

Bull Testing

BSE – Breeding Soundness Exams

Using a subfertile bull may lead to longer calving intervals, a lower number of calves produced and increased costs from wintering over open females. All of these results cause serious economic loss to the cow-calf producer (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Factsheet 410/20 Beef Bull Fertility).

Los Lunas Animal Clinic doctors perform bull fertility exams at your ranch. We have an experienced team of professionals who can come to you and meet your fertility program needs. We customize your results to the breadth and depth required by your fertility program.

We use a Pulsator electroejaculator and a digital microscope so you can view each bull’s semen as we evaluate. We can help you make decisions on which bulls to continue as we test. More comprehensive written reports are available if desired.

Trich testing (for trichomoniasis) is also available and recommended at the time of evaluation.

We offer limited on-site pharmacy products and drugs for use in treatments on property, and starter prescriptions. We are making every effort to provide the most economical access possible to the products you need to care for your pets.

We continue to offer written prescriptions for you to fill at your personal pharmacy.

We also offer access to the convenience of the Online Pharmacy. This pharmacy compares to any of the major commercial pharmacies. They offer prescription diets, drug compounding, complete dosage options, and equine products.

Our hospital provides a wide variety of in-house diagnostic testing with the most state-of-the-art technology available. It is our goal to provide your pet with the highest level of care possible, and our diagnostic tools help us do that.
Exams & Consultations
Our staff will get a chance to talk to you and see if you are having any trouble with your pet. We will also go over diet, preventative medicine, and exercise to ensure that your pet is as healthy as possible. Then, one of our veterinarians will do a complete physical examination of your pet. It is always good to have a baseline in case your pet ever becomes ill. We also want to monitor your pet’s weight, ensuring that your pet stays a healthy weight. It is much easier to start a diet when a pet is a pound overweight instead of fifteen! Our veterinarian will also look for any potential problems. Our goal is to catch any problems before they become major ones. The sooner that we are able to catch a problem, the easier it is to treat it, and the more likely that your pet will make a full recovery!
Preventative Medicine

Regular checkups allow us to establish a baseline in your pet’s health and make us aware of any changes that may indicate future problems. We highly recommend regular exams. Often times health problems that go undetected can become more serious issues when left untreated, so checkups are important even when your pet appears healthy.

There are a variety of diseases which affect our pets and other animals. This makes proper vaccination vital in protecting them from the many types of illnesses they are susceptible to. It’s important to consult with us about the unique risks of living in our region. We will be happy to discuss the benefits of protecting your pet with vaccinations, as well as, provide you with information on the required vaccinations for your pet.
